Dear Confused,
If your friend doesn't care that you like the same person, then that's great! However, they may have feelings of jealousy and like you said, competitiveness. Remember that we're still in middle school and don't have to get serious about dating, but here's one thing you can do. If your friend is the second thing I named, don't mention or talk about that person at all. Keep it to yourself. Of course, it's fun to tell your best friend about your likes, and all of that sort– but you don't always have to tell your best friend who you like! Hope this helps!

Dear Durfee Warrior: There is someone who has caught my eye. Unfortunately, my best friend likes that person too. I don't want it to seem as if I am "competing" with my best friend, but I don't want to stop liking the person. What should I do?
